Is it illegal for me to provide an estimation of cost of needed repairs for a building without a contractor license?

GeorgiaConstruction Contract
Anonymous Contractor

I am in the process of obtaining a residential light commercial license in Georgia. I have been approved by the state to take the exam but have not done that yet. I have a friend that is asking me to provide him with an estimate on doing some repairs to a small tire service building. I am not intending to do the work until licensed but is it illegal for me to provide him an estimation of the cost of the repairs needed for his facility, Not a quote for me to do the work.

I'm not aware of any issues with providing a quote when unlicensed. If there's no intention to actually perform the work, and if you both fully understand you can't perform the work, then providing a quote is essentially just having a conversation about what costs to expect. Still, it's important to clearly state that your estimate is just that - an estimate - and it's not necessarily indicative of what a licensed contractor would charge for the same work. And, I'd be hesitant to use that quote as any formal negotiation tool or basis for pricing the work with some other contractor. Finally, I'm no expert on Georgia's licensing rules. So, for ultimate clarity, it'd be wise to contact the licensing board or a Georgia construction attorney to see what they have to say on the matter.
