In most situations, the safest way to proceed is to assume that multiple preliminary notices will be required. While rights might potentially be lost if only one notice is sent and multiple were required - rights will never be lost where only 1 notice was required, but multiple were sent. That being said, there are some situations where sending one notice for work done at separate addresses might be appropriate.

For one, § 8206 of the California Civil Code states that a subcontractor will only need to send one preliminary notice for all work done at the same "work of improvement," unless they're performing work pursuant to contracts with more than one subcontracor. So, if it's really one single project, work is being done under one contract across the separate addresses, and the same owner owns all of the separate addresses - then one notice should be sufficient.

Additionally, preliminary notices can safely be bundled together when working under one contract with a common interest development. More on that here: Mechanics Liens and Common-Interest Developments — In California, It’s Tricky.

For further discussion on California preliminary notices, this article should be really useful: The Ultimate Guide to California’s 20-Day Preliminary Notice. Plus, keep in mind that consulting with a California construction lawyer, potentially through Levelset's Legal Guard or by reaching out to one of these top CA construction lawyers, can help to clear up complex lien and notice questions.
