Can contractor change quote ?

CaliforniaChange Orders

The original contract stated " Install re - purposed roof tile, buy and install about 600 sq ft of new roof tiles". Since the color can't match to original color we can;t use the old tile and have buy all new tile roof. The contractor sent me a quote for new roof tile total SQ 21.35 for my 1510 sq ft house from roof tile company on 9/4/2019. I agreed to pay my share which is 15.35 SQ. Now He stated that SQ number is not right. He increased to 34 SQ from 21.35 SQ (which is 1265 sq ft more )and asked me pay more. I believed that He play money game and wanted me to pay his part 600 sq ft . Shall I pay this increase number.

Generally, there's some room for flexibility in a quote if an agreement isn't officially executed based on the quote which was provided. After all, without more, a quote is just that - a quote. The fastest solution to suss out whether there's some questionable calculation involved would be to ask them to show how they got to their price. While it may be possible for them to fudge the numbers some, it should be quickly apparent if they're making up numbers out of nowhere. Further, it may be helpful to get a second quote for the work to be done. If the price increase was due to a mathematical error, then that should be quickly ascertainable. If there's been an attempt to arbitrarily raise the price, that should become apparent pretty quickly and then it might be possible to move forward with a different contractor. Ultimately, though, if it looks like a contractor has been reasonable in setting their price and if it looks like a prior price was artificially low due to a mathematical error, a new price may be appropriate (and even necessary) to have the work done. But, if the contractor is trying to pull a fast one on the owner - and the price calculation shows that - then it may be time to move on to another contractor.
