California preliminary notice forms can be found hereor, a California preliminary notice can be sent easily and for free through Levelset's software, here. It's important to note that a direct contractor is only required to send a California preliminary notice to the construction lender, if there is a construction lender on the project. Otherwise, no preliminary notice is specifically required in order for a direct contractor to retain lien rights. Other notices, like a notice of intent to lien, may be used to help encourage payment if it becomes necessary, however.
