Mechanics lien, what rights does the handyman have and the homeowner.

PennsylvaniaMechanics Lien

hired a handyman (he's unlicensed)to fly from CA to PA to do some work on my property. It seemed to be easier than to try and find someone in PA. I went with him and worked along with him (as he said, I worked longer and outdid him and I'm a 67 year old female). He was there 6 days on the property. He charged me $3000. I refused to give him that much. He wouldn't tell me how much he was going to charge. He just kept telling me not to worry about it. He didn't do $3000 worth of work and had no contract. He has not given me a receipt for the money that I gave him which was $1500 plus I paid for all of his meals and he has not given me an invoice. He now says he is going to place a lien against my property. What rights do I have?

In Pennsylvania, contractors can still technically file liens based on verbal contracts, but it isn't easy to do. The claimant would need to show that a clear price or rate was proposed by the claimant, accepted by the owner, and then fully performed by that claimant. Based on the facts which you described, this unlicensed out-of-state handyman is going to have a hard time filing a lien against your property.
