I need to see if I can place a lien on my ex-wife's house after being divorced 19 years.

I used around $2,500 of my own money to come up with the down payment for our house when I was married. My wife and I did not have sufficient credit to obtain a loan for the mortgage. My wife's father then co-signed on the loan. But since I came up with the down payment and helped make mortgage payments, I was wanting to know if I can place a lien on the property to get my down payment of $2,500 back? We've been divorced for more than 19 years. I was hoping to place a lien on the property for re-payment of my down payment. I need to know if I can place a lien on the property? During the divorce, I remember filing a les-pendis on the property.

That's a good question. Unfortunately, our expertise here at the Construction Legal Center lies in construction payment issues, including mechanics liens. While some security interest may be available in the property (including, potentially, a lien), mechanics liens are most appropriate when construction work has been performed and unpaid. However, there are a number of other online resources that might be helpful to you. Specifically, the attorneys at Avvo.com come from all different practice areas and are available to answer legal questions on a variety of different questions.
