Exemption to $500 rule for handymen?

CaliforniaLicenses
Anonymous Contractor

Hi, could you clarify the role of a handyman and the handyman exception to the $500 rule? Is it true there’s a grey area where a sole-proprietor handyman who doesn’t work at construction/re-model/new home sites may charge more than $500 for installation of finished products that do not become a fixed part of a structure? What are some examples of these types of projects? Thank you in advance!

Just apply for your license. The test isn't that hard, and based upon what you wrote you'll probably pass the CSLB exam the first time you take it. Otherwise, review Business and Professions Code 7148 which discusses the exemption. An example would be Ikea furniture.
