Do i have the right to lien the property?

CaliforniaBack ChargesCollectionsConstruction Contract
Anonymous Contractor

We did renovations for an apartment complex for 3 years. We tried to raise prices last year, so they found someone cheaper. We did not have a contract, but renovated over 200 units. I sent them an invoice for materials on cancelled units, and complex specific materials ordered for this job. The management company hasn't responded to my emails. My 20 day window expires tomorrow. Can I lien them today? Approximately $30,000. I offered to ship the materials to their complex as well.

You can put a lien on the property up to 90 days after construction is completed. However, if there is a lender on the property you have to give them a preliminary notice (if you are the general contractor); you can do that at any time before construction ends, but it will only cover the 20 days prior to the notice.   That aside, you may also be able to sue for the reasonable value of your services.
