Can I file a Lien for work completed if the scope changed once I started?

CaliforniaPreliminary Notice

I supplied staging (all furniture items) to a property to be listed for sale. An estimate was provided and a contract based on the estimate. After completing the work and adding furniture pieces that were initially credited on the estimate (I was told the items were on site and they were not) I added items necessary to complete the job. The house sold and now the owner does not want to pay me for the added materials. Do I have any recourse? The project began May 1st and ended June 11th.

You don’t have lien rights because you didn’t provide permanent improvements to the property. However, you still have the right to sue the person who hired you for breach of contract. This can be done in Small Claims Court or in Superior Court. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about this.
