Two things to note.

1) Mechanics liens attach to the property being improved, rather than against a company or other project participant.

2) As far as who has lien rights in Michigan, the statutes generally require the work to contribute to the "physical improvement of the property," which doesn't seem to cover security services. Some states, such as South Carolina do specifically include security guard services under their definition of "laborer." But that doesn't appear to be the case in Michigan, as the definition of laborer also requires "an improvement to real property."

Therefore a mechanics lien is likely not the proper avenue for recovering payment. Your options moving forward will generally be limited to claims under breach of contract or unjust enrichment.

If you need more guidance or help filing these claims, we have a few Michigan-based attorneys in our Levelset Community that may be able to represent you.

Good luck!
