FloridaConstruction Contract
Anonymous Contractor

My contractor sent me an e mail confirming his price of 20 k to demo my property. ( no other contract was signed and we paid over the 20 k requested. ) After the job was over he said the costs were more greater than he had thought and sent me a bill for an additional 7k . I asked for evidence of his increased costs . He has responded threatening me with a lien against my property. Can he do this ?

The short answer is, yes, he can. But the longer answer is that you can fight it even if he files a lien. I suggest you call his bluff and wait and see if he actually files a lien. He has 90 days from his last work on your property to record a lien. If he does not, you are homefree. If he does, contact a construction attorney for advice on how to proceed.
