I sent a preliminary notice for a school project with a total of $55,000; as of last week, we have shipped $74,000 worth of product. Do I need to update my preliminary notice so that I have protection for the amount the project has gone over budget?
I recommend that MORE COMMUNICATION is best in almost every instance. Hiding going over budget by not communicating is cause for anger when the project management gets the bill.

You cannot lien government owned property. If this is a private school, then the Notice of Furnishing only needs the initial amount. Your contract may require written change orders to increase the total amount. However, there is no requirement to amend a Notice of Furnishing.
Much more information is needed to answer you. Is it public or private school? Are you working directly for the school board or are you a subcontractor? As a sheet metal supplier, you are probably supplying the general contractor. Is your contract fixed price or time & materials? what do you mean by "preliminary notice?" Are federal funds involved? All of these issues would make a difference in your situation.
