My question: We hired a contractor to help with a flooding in our cabin. The contractor completed the project, however submitted us with a bill $18,xxx over the pre-negiotated price to complete the project. We sold the property immediately after the work was complete, even prior to receiving the contractors final invoice. During the project, no change orders where signed or agreed to. We are questioning his invoice and would like to understand where he spent the money prior to paying him. He is refusing to provide us with that information and instead has served us with papers to file a lien on the property. Keep in mind, we no long own the property and he has brought the new owners into the lien. When the property was sold, there was no lien against the property. My question is, can he do this? Does he need to give us notice that he is filing a claim? Thank you
