I have a client that is part owner in the restaurant that we supplied flood doors to and he is a general contractor also. Wanted to know if we can put a lien on his GC business instead of the building the doors went to? Also, how that would affect him?
Liens record a debt against the owner of real property. You cannot file a lien against a business in NJ unless you performed a written contract for that business AND that same business also owns the property which you improved and were not paid. If the business is a tenant on the real property, you would need to produce documents that the landlord was part of the contract and authorized the improvments.
