We did work for a customer and then he did not pay us for our time and materials supplied to improve the appearance of the home.

You hope you get paid. Normally, if you will get paid you should get that fairly soon. If a few months pass and they pay nothing, then it is time to consider foreclosing on the lien (if the value makes that a logical decision) or proceed to sue and try to collect. If the amount due is some $7500 or less, you are likely best proceeding in small claims.
