The folliwng site should provide you with all the information you need to know about obtaining and paying for a Maryland Home Improvement License. https://www.dllr.state.md.us/license/mhic/mhiclicreq.shtml You do not have to be bonded, but there are minimum liability insurance requriements noted at that link. As for the umbrella (and also your GL), it really depends on the policy language. If "your work" language in the policy includes work performed both by you and on your behalf by others, then the coverage for negligent acts or omissions would extend to your subs. Remember, in most cases you must exhaust your GL limit before the umbrella policy kicks in, so you want to make sure that the policy language is properly worded in both the GL and umbrella. You should also consider having your subcontractor provide at GL, auto, and worker's comp/employer's liability (most should have that coverage anyway). For your larger subs, you should also consider requiring excess liability. If you don't do anything else, however, make sure they have worker's comp converage that would cover workplace injuries in Maryland for at least the statutory limit.
