How to obtain a FL General Contractor's License for an established out of state GC?

Florida
Anonymous Contractor

We are a general contractor licensed in Illinois that been in business 40 years. We build items for museums and theme parks. In order to install our work at the Orlando area theme parks, we will need a FL GC license. With this new law, can we apply directly for a license, or do we need to take the test and register an employee in the state of FL to hold the license? We have opened an Office in Orlando and are a registered business in the state. I'm the VP of the Florida office and have 7 years experience of designing, fabricating, and installing complex structures in the theme parks for 2 state registered general contractors. Would that qualify as the 4 years of experience should I need to be the one to get the license?

The application process and outcome depends on the specific details. The Construction IndustryLicensing Board (CILB) is responsible for licensing and regulating the construction industry. To become a Certified GC "You need four years of field experience in the category of licensure you wish to obtain. One of those four years must be supervisory experience. You can also substitute up to three years of military service or up to three years of college credit hours in place of the required field experience." Source: CILB. Whether specific experience satisfies the qualification will be determined through the CILB application process. I have found the CILB staff to be very approachable if you have questions. If you would like further assistance, you may contact me offline to discuss your situation.
