How to handle a contractor who has stopped work

Washington DC

My contractor has stopped working. What can I legally do short of filing a lawsuit?

I need more details to be able to make suggestions. Why, from the contractor's perspective, did he stop work? Was he paid? Is he trying to handle too many simultaneous jobs? Does the contract contain performance penalties? Have you paid ahead of the work performed? What does the contract define as breach? Could you get a replacement to finish the job? Are there materials delays? Are you getting in the way? Will mediation resolve this? I suggest you set up a consult with an experienced lawyer to review the facts and determine if there is some way to get this moving.
