How long does a sub have to file a lien? Please explain "project as a whole".

CaliforniaMechanics Lien

"Subs and laborers must file a California mechanics lien within 90 days from the completion of the project as a whole." Does this mean the sub has 90 days after completion of everyone's work on the project or just the individual sub's work?

That means you have 90 from completion of the PROJECT, not completion of your own work. So you may have more time to lien than you might have thought, unless you’re one of the last trades on.

Be careful of the situation where an owner files a notice of completion, because that will shorten your time to file a mechanics' lien from 90 days from the completion of the project to 30 days from the completion of the project.
