How do I know that my contractor file an extension on a original lien.

You should get served with the extension and you can confirm the extension by checking with the county clerk.

An extension of a mechanic's lien would be on file in County Clerk's office. It is a matter of public record. Many Countys have these records online. If not, you have to physically go to the County Clerk's office which is usually located in the County Supreme Court Building.

Are we dealing with a single family dwelling? If so, that extension must be obtained by court order in a special proceeding. If it is any other type of private project, then (assuming that it's the first extension) be done by filing a simple notice of extension, which must be served on you. If you haven't received such a document, you can check the county clerk's office; the lien and its extension are a matter of public record.
