Does the Spearin Doctrine apply to my situation?

Arkansas
Anonymous Contractor

For a residential remodel job, my contractor estimated $600 for the electrical work. He now claims it will be $5,250 to bring the electrical up to code. This will involve bringing the house up to 200A service, splitting the single breaker in the main box to three breakers, and numerous other details. I maintain that the condition of the main box was visible at the time he gave me the original estimate, so I should not be obligated to pay the extra cost. Does the Spearin Doctrine apply in this case?
