can i file a lien without a signed contract?

I am the GC working on a residential (condo) bath addition. I have no signed contract. Can I still file a lien?

Generally speaking, a GC does not need a written signed contract to file a lien. However, depending on the size of the job, a GC may need to file a "notice of contract" prior to commencing work in order to perserve its lien rights. And, a GC on a residential job, needs to provide written notice to the homeonwer (and signed by the homeowner) of the GC's right to file a lien. Failure to provide such notice may subject the GC to penalties and damages.
