Can a contractor put a lien on me if he did not finish the job and what he did do was done extremely poorly

Wisconsin

We hired a contractor, there was not a contract. But he was paid more than 80% of the agreed amount. He only finished 50% of the work. The major part of it was to paint and hang the kitchen cabinets. The cabinets were never sanded there for they turned out horrible. Paint drips, paint is coming off already, they are tacky. The hinges he put on did not allow the doors to close they were crooked. He didn't finish any aspect of the jobs that we hired him for. Now he is threating to put a lien on me.

Wisconsin has very consumer friendly rules as to dealings with home improvement contractors including requiring a written contract. If he/she sues or puts a construction lien on your property you likely have recourse against the contractor.
