I have been in business almost 4 decades and worked all over the nation with many of the largest builders and never seen such blatant abuse of the backcharge procedure. It is not uncommon to see 10-20% of your contract erased by backcharges. After being on more than 5 KBE projects, it is evident that this is their culture, and one cannot defend against this type of behavior. Our company will never contract with KBE again. The word will eventually get out about their methods.

no good communication, slow to pay, problems with change orders and retention payment

Final comment - I am the person who just made 2 comments about KBE. My company has been in business for over 20 years. Levelset couldn't suggest anything we haven't already done to get money due to us from KBE. Maybe you could suggest who subs can reach out to in Connecticut, KBE's headquarters is in CT, who would give a damn enough to investigate KBE's deceptive business practices.

My second post about KBE - KBE is presently attempting to backcharge us for numerous items we were not made aware of until the job was completed, which is a breach of its contract. KBE will not pay us for outstanding change orders, and has come up with bogus charges to reduce the amount of retainage it owes us. In addition KBE made it impossible to invoice them because it intentionally did not upload the documents we needed to submit monthly invoices. KBE takes advantage of the subs it contracts with because IT CAN! Subs generally don't have the financial resources to legally go up against big general contractors like KBE. KBE financially bleeds subs to the point subs have to back off because they can no longer afford the attorney fees. KBE's actions represent poor business practices. Every sub who has had similar experiences with KBE please post your comments here. Something needs to be done about GCs who take advantage of the subs they count on to make a profit.

Our subcontracting company has had the same experience with KBE. KBE approves change orders and then refuses to pay. There is nothing Levelset can suggest that we haven't already done.

They approve change orders then refuse to pay

KBE agrees to pay for items and then later will not pay for them. KBE also will try to back charge you for items that you are not responsible for.
