The short answer is you are correct that a written contract is not required to establish a lien claim under Maine law. Maine law permits a contractor to establish a lien claim on the basis of the "consent of the owner" to the performance of labor and the furnishing of materials in the absence of a written contract. Please keep in mind there are other important steps and deadlines involved in the lien claim process.
