Will lien rights be affected by county recorder office closures

CaliforniaCoronavirusLien DeadlinesMechanics Lien

Due to Coronavirus concerns some California Counties have suspended over-the-counter document recording services until further notice. How soon should we file a lien if we will need to process it through the mail?

Many counties have either limited how they're accepting documents in response to COVID-19. Some counties are blocking walk-ins, some counties are restricting mail intake, and others are only accepting documents through electronic recording. At this time, the state of California hasn't given any indication as to how this might affect those trying to file documents. In the face of past natural disasters, some states and counties across the United States have loosened up their requirements and deadlines. But, currently, there's no way to know what might happen, unfortunately. Knowing when, exactly, to file a mechanics lien can be challenging - even when there isn't a global pandemic that's restricting public services. But, in the face of growing restrictions, it may make sense to file claims a little earlier than normal for jobs where a lien claim is necessary. With that being said, it doesn't mean a claimant should necessarily jump to file a lien if there isn't a payment issue. And, keep in mind that there are options to secure payment while working with customers, rather than against them.
