If you're providing labor to a CA public works project as an employee, you should probably be receiving prevailing wages. But, if you're properly classified as an independent contractor, prevailing wages may not be required. More on CA prevailing wage laws here: Understanding California Prevailing Wage Requirements & Rules. Consulting with a local California construction lawyer about making a wage and hour claim may be worthwhile. They'll be able to review your status and advise on whether you've been properly classified as an employee or an independent contractor. You can begin the search for an attorney here, if that's something you're interested in: Find a California Construction Lawyer. Regardless of whether prevailing wage rates apply, if your hours and wages are being altered, and if you think some of your pay is being done under the table, then filing a wage claim with the California Dept. of Industrial Relations may be in order.
