When filing a mechanics lien what should be included in the amount?

CaliforniaMechanics Lien

We have not been paid for extra work completed for 4 months now. There is still work from scope that needs to be completed as well. When filing a mechanics lien do I include the extra work amount and the amount for the incomplete scope plus retention amount?

Your mechanics lien should include all amounts that you have spent for which you have not received payment, including pending but unapproved change orders and retention. You should not record a mechanics lien until your work has been completed. The deadlines for recording mechanics liens are tied to project completion, so you want to make sure you do not miss the deadline. Consult with an attorney if you have any questions about when to record a mechanic's lien, how to fill out the lien, and service of the notice of lien.
