What options do i have if the mechanic's lien expired before initiating anything?

Once the lien is expired, you can no longer do anything with the lien, itself. However, the lien is just one possible remedy. You can also simply sue for the balance due on the contract. I usually sue on the contract and skip the lien, except in certain circumstances where the lien has more power (like when the project is under a construction loan).
