What do I need to a residential contractors license in Florida?

FloridaLicenses

What truly qualifies as experience in order to obtain a license? There seems to be some gray area. I have a 4 year degree in criminal justice. I have 5 years of military as a combat medic. Does this mean I only need 1 year of experience? And what does that experience look like. My family has owned a mobile home business for 40 years. Before the military, I lead a crew of men that finished trim work, remodeled homes, etc. would this qualify?

Work that's wholly unrelated to the construction industry would likely not count towards the experience requirement for obtaining a Florida contractor's license. And, unless the college credits were put toward a degree relating to construction trades, they won't count toward obtaining a license either. Though, work done in the industry - like trim work, remodeling, and working as a foreman - could certainly count. Though, I'm not sure if there's a time limit for how recent that experience must be. For more information on applying for a Florida contractors license, this page from the Department of Business & Professional Regulation should help: Getting Started in the Construction Industry. Additionally, a Florida construction attorney or a Florida license consulting service - like Licenses, etc. - could probably provide more insight.
