What do I do now?

Colorado

I did a custom bathroom remodel and they refused to pay their total bill. I filed an intent to lien and then filed a mechanic lien. What is my next step

In Colorado, assuming you properly provided 10 days’ notice before filing, and then you filed your Mechanics Lien correctly, the next step would be filing a Foreclosure Lawsuit against the property owners of record and the general contractor (if you were the subcontractor). If you are a company that holds the lien rights, you will need to be represented by an attorney in court when bringing the lawsuit. The Foreclosure Lawsuit has a 6 month from the last date of substantive work requirement that must be followed.

It is important to determine if there would be anything limiting your lien rights. We recommend talking to an attorney. Generally even when contractors have prior “experience” in the mechanic’s lien process we often find mistakes when it comes to actually filing a lawsuit to enforce and foreclose on the mechanic’s lien.
