What can be done to assure payment after work was performed

New JerseyPayment Disputes

What can be done to assure payment? Being faced with a situation of pay being taken away after I have finished a whole month of work without complaints. What law is there to protect me from this

Additional information would be needed, but if you have a contract for construction work, your contract may describe how to address this situation. Legally, you are generally entitled to be paid for the work you performed. The amount earned should have been demanded initially by an invoice. You could then follow up with a letter demanding payment and threatening to take legal action if the payment is not made. You may also be able to file a Mechanic's Lien against the property where the work was performed, depending on the nature of the work, whether you had a written contract, and when your last day of work was, among other items.
