What are my next steps?

ArizonaMechanics Lien

I had a contractor come give an estimate for repairs on water damage of my home. The contractor had my boyfriend, who is not on the property deed or insurance claim, sign a contract. After the construction company increased the bid on my job, after receiving my home insurance estimate, I did not allow the construction company to complete the work. I have now been mailed a 20 day notice. What can I do?

A preliminary 20-day notice is given routinely by contractors before beginning work on a job. It does not create an interest or lien right in your property. You can respond back to the party giving the preliminary notice and inform them that you will not be employing their services on the property. If the company sends you a bill for work that you did not authorize or attempts to lien your property, you should speak with an experienced construction attorney.
