We dont owe a contractor additional money but he's threatening to put Mechanics lien on our property

ArizonaMechanics Lien

Hired a AC installer in Aug 2019 to install duct work and AC unit on our detached garage. We paid final bill in full within days. 10 months later in June 2020 we get new bill stating we still owe $500 more. We received a final statement from the company showing we had a zero balance in Aug 2019. Can they put a lien against our property without taking us to court first. We have all the documentation to prove our payments etc.

Normally, yes a contractor can put a mechanic's lien on property without going to court. The lien, however, cannot be foreclosed without going to court. However, in your situation, I highly doubt they will lien the property. The lien must be recorded within 4 months after completion of the work, and the suit to foreclose the lien must be filed within 6 months of recording the lien. Based on your statement of the facts all of those deadlines have run.
