To file lien does there need to be a contract?

IllinoisMechanics Lien

I’m a customer and my handyman made faulty claim of owning him 12,000.00 from a project from last year. We didn’t have a contract . I payed him an hourly rate and he was paid up to date. Can he falsely filed a lien ?

A lien can be based on an express contract, written or oral, or an implied contract. A written contract is not required. Sounds like you have a defense.
