Hi i was hire a contractor to work on my building and step plan are from phase 1-5, phase 1 minor problem, pay in full, phase 2 incomplete, poor job but paid in full and the contractor still demand me to pay him in phase 3 i refused he took all his tools before he left he gave mr the building key to and said he is going to put lien on my building and sue me and left he is abandoned the building . so that night when i got home i sent him a email letter said that i am terminated the contract due to unfinished phase 2, poor job. I also confronted him about he he cheating on the electrical bill from $143,000 to $165,000. Do i have a right to terminate him? this is a mix used building

Ultimately, whether or not a termination is permissible will come down to the terms of the contract and, potentially, the termination provisions present in that agreement. Certainly, though, substandard work and project abandonment might serve as solid grounds for arguing there's been a material breach of contract leading to a valid termination for cause. And, if the contract has a termination for convenience provision, termination should be on the table regardless.
