Subcontractors license for the State of Florida

FloridaLicenses

We are an Excavation subcontractor in the State of Texas looking to get a license to do work in the State of Florida in the same capacity as a Texas Subcontractor. Most of the information I have been reading for the licensing tasks needed to complete in Florida refer to "Contractor" but this seems to take on the definition of a "General Contractor" like in the State of Texas. Does Florida have licensing that I need to follow to be licensed as a subcontractor in the state? I have heard from one source that the only way to be licensed as a subcontractor in Florida is to be registered by each county you will perform work in. Please clarify this and it's requirements....

You will most likely need to obtain a Florida License. You can secure a CGC or CUC license to do excavation work - but to get the CGC you need commercial construction with 4 story new structures. There are exceptions to licensure but generally speaking the requirement for licensure is based on the scope of the work. There is a new method to secure licensure through endorsement and you would need your Texas license for 10 years and then apply and meet the additional requirements.

Here is a blog post on the 10 year rule referenced above. https://hammerngavel.com/out-of-state-contractor-licensing/6fgnqdoyad2tlxkpkhik8mf4osgxi8

One challenge I have found with clients in Texas is that Texas does not issue a lot of formal licenses, so it is difficult to qualify under the new 10 year rule.

I can answer that you do not have to get a license in each county. Florida is actually doing away with local licenses altogether, and so only the state licenses will matter by 2023.

You should consult with an attorney to see what options are available for you from a licensing standpoint.
