Is it common for a contractor to ask for 10% of project value and ask for first of seven payments on start of work? The project is $380k. Meaning 38k at signing and 48k on start of work. Thanks for input!

There are many different payment terms and plans between different contractors. This would be something you would want to address and negotiate with the contractor.
