Michigan Maintenance and Alterations - Marble & Tile Certification

MichiganLicenses

Have a question about a Michigan Residential Maintenance and Alterations Marble and Tile exam. There seems to be no information regarding what is covered on this exam. I've called the State Licensing folks numerous times. As much as I hate to say it, their answers were almost embarrassing. It is interesting to me that the state would require a license, yet they have no interest in assisting a contractor that would like to do the 'right thing' and acquire the license. I have purchased the Michigan Residential Contractors Code Book as well. There are no regulations related to Tile Installation referenced in the Code Book. It seems to be a mystery as to what is covered on the Marble & Tile exam in Michigan, yet it is required by the State prior to installing tile as a contractor. I am searching anywhere I can think of to get answers as to how to pass this exam. Thought I would ask here as well. Does anyone on this panel have any ideas as to what the Tile installation guidelines may be?

To my knowledge Michigan Residential Builders and Maintenance and alterations exams are two part: 1) a practical exam on the aspects of building/construction you are being licensed for; and 2) an exam on the law, business and administration of a construction businesses. I used to teach a course on part 2 of the exam to potential builders at Macomb Community College. I do not know the specifics of part 1 of the exam for tile installation guidelines. I know there were several courses available (both commercial short courses and community college courses) The above said I was told one time (many years ago) that the general builders exam is probably easiest because it is general.. not specific. If you do not want to take a course (or cannot find one specific to tile installation), it might be easiest to simply take the exam ... if you fail then you can always take it again after you learn what types of things are on the exam.

Your question is outside of my wheelhouse, but I was curious and took a run at finding the answer to your question. So, relying on Google, I found a test prepration company that covers the Marble & Tile exam here - https://www.contractorexam.com/michigan-tile-marble-maintenance-alteration-exam.php

The same site included a PDF outline of the topics covered in the exam, that I thought was pretty helpful - https://proctor2.psionline.com/programs/MI/pdf/2006TILE1.pdf

Good luck!
