Mechanic's lien on my vehicle guidance

CaliforniaRecovery Options

It's a pretty overwhelming and long story but I have a truck that was traded to me straight across for my last truck about 3 months ago and it needed a few things but ran good. Eventually I fixed the truck and used it for errands and such, but it started to have issues. Ultimately it was needing a transmission. A "friend" knew someone else they trusted and he said it would be done by the person for$500. That would be our first mistake. After the truck is not working for about a month or so I decided to let the shop do the work and it was picked up from my house via tow truck and brought to the shop for a rebuild of my transmission. Long story relatively short I explain to the shop that I don't have a lot of money but really need my vehicle. They assured me that I can make payments for the service and take it once it was completely done. It's been 7 weeks since I paid$500 to get it towed and start the work. The truck is done since a week ago and now I am told that the owner is going to put a lien on it. I've never been in a situation like this one and don't know what my rights and responsibilities are. Mind you there's NO DOCUMENTATION FOR THE TRUCK THAT I HAVE SIGNED! The only thing I have to show is my receipt for the $500 and verbal agreements
