When an HOA lien has been filed and must be released, generally, that release will come at the cost of the owner. Now, whether a certain fee must be paid to the HOA or whether an owner is entitled to release the lien themselves, potentially at a cheaper price, might be an open question that depends on the HOA agreement and/or the agreement to release the filed lien. This sounds very similar to another California HOA lien question we received a few days ago, and I think the answer provided for that question will be helpful. You can find that question and answer here.

We went to sell our home 3 years ago and found we had a lien on the house dated 30 years ago. We refinance d our mortgage 2 or 3 years after the original purchase and the lending Co never released our lien. They have been out of business over 20 years. We decided to stay in our home but would like to take care of this so our children do not someday have to deal with this when we are gone
