Lien release?

MassachusettsLien Releases

My dealership is saying that they cant sell me a car until they receive a lean release from the sate of NY. They say it will take a week but they won't have issues actually selling me the car. I am wondering if that's a truthful statement. Is getting a lien release ever an issue? Should I start looking for other vehicles?

We generally provide help with respect to construction-related questions, not automotive liens, but I'll try to provide a bit of information. Liens generally appear on a vehicle title in favor of a lender when money was loaned for a party to purchase the vehicle. Provided the amount due to the lender has been repaid, clearing the lien from the title should be something the dealership can accomplish without much trouble. Since many people obtain loans for the purchase of a vehicle, having a title with a lien is not a rare occurrence. It is in a subsequent purchaser's best interest to have all liens removed, because if a lien still exists on the vehicle title, the lien holder may be able to seize the car as the collateral for the outstanding debt and sell it to recover the amount due. Getting a clean title should be relatively easy process for the dealer, but it's not inconceivable it could take a few days. Paperwork can take time.
