Joint checks

Arizona

Hello i am a GC being asked to sign a joint check agreement but i am weary about signing and creating more obligation for myself. Can I offer to just pay for the materials directly as part of the subcontractors total contract agreement amount? Any help is greatly appreciated.

If there is already a contract in place, then there is probably nothing that would obligate you to sign an additional contract for a joint check agreement. Check the contract to make sure. If there is no contract in place, you cannot be forced to sign a joint check agreement, but I suppose it could potentially kill the deal if the person asking you to sign it insists on it.

I see. Well we have a contract with the subcontractor and the materials shop is asking for the agreement because they are a “newer” account. I don’t have to sign it but I don’t want the project to lag behind if they can’t get the materials. That’s why my idea was to pay the supplier directly…

It cannot hurt to float the idea to the supplier and the sub. Hard to see why they would object to that arrangement.
