Is an email response for something unclear on a Subcontract sufficient to clarify something that isn't specific on it?

California

I am a Subcontractor with a Subcontract that states a 10% retention may be held on a job where the owner does not hold retention. The Prime Contractor responded via email that there will be not retention because the Owner does not hold retention.

The contract terms will be whatever you sign on that day. If the retention clause is still there when you sign, chances are the GC can enforce it.
