In the state of WI, do you need a general contractors license to manage a project and get paid for it?

Wisconsin

We are looking to be our own general contractors on a family members house. We would be looking at getting paid to do this job. With getting paid do we need a general contractors license to do this? Thank you!

Here is a strong summary of licensing considerations for small general contractors. In short, I highly recommend getting the proper license. While the risk of your family member suing you for negligent GC work may or may not be lower than an unrelated owner, you should consider claims by subcontractors and suppliers. Being unlicensed may put yourself and your family members at a legal disadvantage if a dispute arises with subs and suppliers. https://www.levelset.com/blog/wisconsin-contractor-licensing-guide/.

Thank you! But technically a GC license is not required?

Its not called a "GC License" but technically a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Certification IS required for work on a single-family dwelling. The penalty is a misdemeanor and probably limited to a fine, but that is not a good reason to ignore licensing requirements. You should not do it because of how it weakens your defenses in a legal dispute. Your subs and suppliers may use is in court against you.
