If there is no prelien filed on a job what are my legal options to get paid?

CaliforniaPayment Disputes
Delores Ada
General Manager at Acme Glass Company

We are a subcontractor on a project for which the client of the GC is withholding payment without giving specifics as to why. There was no prelien filed on this project. What are our legal options at this point.

You can sue your general contractor with whom you have a direct contract. Always serve a preliminary notice when you are a subcontractor! https://www.wolfflaw.com/20-day-or-preliminary-notice-requirements-and-laws-on-california.html
This is NOT legal advice, just a general discussion of the law, as we are not familiar with the specific documents and facts of your case, etc.

Breach of Contract.

If the job is still going on, you can still do a pre-lien and it will reach back 20 days, so depends on what work was performed and when payment for that was due.
