I would like make sure filing a lien is what is best but unsure how to make sure its done correctly

Whether the lien is the sole process depends on the facts such as whether this is commercial or residential and other circumstances. A lien should be filed but there are other possible avenues to consider (such as trust fund and others) that may make sense.
