That's a really good question, and it's one we don't get all that often. To determine whether a mechanics lien has been filed against a given property, you should check property records of the county where work was performed. To perform such a search, an attorney is likely not required - most counties have a relatively friendly website where the county property records can be searched. If you search "_______ County Official Records search" online, entering the appropriate county in the blank, it should be fairly easy to find the appropriate site to search the county records. At that site, the given properties can be searched by providing identifying information for the property, the owner, or the contractor. If that search is unsuccessful, calling the local county recorder could be a good move. They can be extremely helpful in guiding parties through the search process or may actually just perform the search themselves and provide the results.
