I am in Delaware and trying to obtain payment for a kitchen demo, renovations and materials purchased

Delaware

I am the owner of a renovation company. My customer agreed to have me demo and renovate her kitchen. There was a deposit of half of the total cost. The customer decided to have a family friend come in and finish the work and says she isn’t paying the remaining balance. The half that was put down does not cover all of the materials that were purchased or the labor that was provided for half of the job. Would it be beneficial to take them to small claims or or to file a mechanics lien? If I file a lien, could you recommend an attorney?

In this instance a mechanics’ lien could be more expensive to file than the balance you’re seeking (which is not identified in your email). If the amount is under $25,000 I would suggest JP Court, which does not require you to have an attorney (there are requirements to designate someone from the company to represent it in court and a fee for doing so).
