How long do I have to file a mechanic lien when homeowner stop payment on check?

Your deadline to file a lien is tied to the completion date of the project, the service of a notice of completion or cessation, or the cessation of all work on the project for a continuous period of 60 days. If the project was completed, but no notice of completion was filed, you have 90 days from actual completion to record your lien. If a notice of completion or notice of cessation was filed, you have 60 days from the filing of that notice to record your lien. If the project is not complete, but work stops for 60 straight days, you have 90 days from the end of that 60 day period to record your lien, or a total of 150 days from he last date work was performed. Keep in mind that if the project is not done and you record a lien, you should not resume work on the project until the lien is satisfied. Performing additional work will void the lien. The mechancs lien deadline runs from the "completion" of work on the prioject. You likely have 90 days from completion of the project to record your mecahnics lien, but "competion" is a amorphous term and there are exceptions.
